tBTC Cryptography & Quantum Risk Profile
Verdict
Profile view: tBTC is not quantum-proof. Cross-chain minting and EVM holder signatures rely on classical public-key schemes on Bitcoin and Ethereum classes.
Overview
This is the Wave 7e network/profile page for tBTC (app).
tBTC bridges Bitcoin value into EVM ecosystems with threshold-style designs. Quantum risk spans BTC and EVM key graphs.
LPs and holders should inventory both sides and governance of the minting system.

Cryptographic profile
- Signatures: ECDSA-secp256k1 for tBTC on EVM hosts, Threshold/minting system keys on Bitcoin and Ethereum sides (verify)
- Hash: Keccak-256 + Bitcoin pipeline hashing
- Public-key exposure: Decentralized wrap design still uses classical crypto on both chains.
- Verify tBTC minting crypto from Threshold/tBTC docs.
What breaks
- Classical signatures authorizing tBTC value under Shor-class adversaries once public keys are known
- Custodial hot wallets and exchange operational keys
- Bridges, issuers, or operator sets outside ordinary user wallets
- Protocol admin, oracle, or guardian keys
Mitigations
- Inventory every key that can move tBTC (self-custody, exchange, multisig, protocol roles)
- Name the host chain and bridge path for every balance
- Document operator/admin sets for L2s and apps
- Track ecosystem PQC research; branding is not deployment
- Use /assessment and claims methodology pages for program framing
FAQ
Threshold minting = PQC?
Threshold ops ≠ post-quantum algorithms automatically.
